Who is Jimothy? Seattle’s viral rotund raccoon is taking the internet by storm

A chubby raccoon nicknamed “Jimothy” has become an unexpected local celebrity after video of the animal roaming Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood spread on social media, sparking fan art, memes and plenty of questions about the unusually round creature.

“What am I looking at?” asks the narrator of a social media video, echoing the reaction of many viewers to footage of the raccoon, whose distinctive dwarf spherical appearance, long limbs and thick tail have drawn widespread attention online.

The “Confusing Crater” has been sighted at various locations around Ballard and has become recognizable to residents due to its unusual shape. According to experts, the raccoon has short spine syndrome, which is described as a non-fatal deformity that gives the signature strange appearance.

At least one witness named the animal “Jimothy”, a name that became increasingly popular among social media users.

When asked about the origin of the nickname, Seattle resident Kiana Hall said, “My husband and I looked him up and we were like, he’s Jimothy.”

While the raccoon’s appearance has prompted jokes online, the video also highlights the affection many people have for this animal. Social media users have shared images and digital artwork celebrating Jimothy, writing “Jimothy we trust” and “Protect him at all costs.”

Viral attention has turned the raccoon into a neighborhood mascot, with the video describing Jimothy gaining “legendary status” online.

“Jimothy” also made an appearance during the Mariners game on Saturday, with someone in a raccoon costume running the team’s iconic 7th inning “Salmon Run”. Jimothy earned the win and the Mariners also won 4–3.

For now, Jimothy continues to delight Seattle residents and Internet users alike, serving as the latest example of how an unexpected wildlife encounter can become an online sensation and bring the community closer together.
