The public reported minor Sales increased in the second quarter due to changes in Medicare drug pricing and softness in consumer spending, which impacted revenues and comparable store sales.
The Lakeland, Florida-based grocer said sales totaled $15.7 billion in the 13 weeks ended June 27, up 1% from $15.6 billion in the year-ago period. In the first six months of the year, sales rose 1.5% to $31.9 billion from $31.4 billion.
Publix was earning a rare decline In Q1, citing some of the same reasons. The retailer reported net income of $794 million for the three months to March 28, down 21.5% from $1 billion in the first quarter a year earlier. Most of the fall was due to the impact of unrealized losses on equity securities.
Second-quarter comparable-store sales declined 0.5% during the quarter and were down 0.3% for the first six months of the year. Publix attributed the decline to changes in Medicare drug pricing and weak consumer spending.
