First trailer for the adaptation directed by Greta Gerwig Narnia: The Wizard’s Nephew has arrived, immersing audiences in a modern retelling of C.S. Lewis’s first book The Chronicles of Narnia.
Beatrice Campbell’s Polly Plummer and David McKenna’s Diggory Kirke begin the clip wondering whether Uncle Andrew Ketterley has gone mad when a sheet reveals the beloved wooden cupboard that marks the entrance to Narnia.
“Sometimes, one story is the beginning of all the others,” a voice like Ciaran Hinds says when the carved cabinet structure stands high in the Ketterley attic.
“Mother always called him the Wizard,” Diggory tells Polly as Daniel Craig’s eccentric Uncle Andrew picks up the bottom of a green glass bottle.
Diggory isn’t sure whether he believes in magic, or whether he’s ready to see what’s on the other side of a different wooden door, which opens into Uncle Andrew’s colorful laboratory.
After picking up the golden ring, Polly asks if magic is real, and Andrew replies that he is indeed a magician.
“See for yourself,” he says, handing Digory more jewelry.
The children explore the “Infinite World”, but before Polly can reach them Digory touches a magical object and tells her not to call Emma Mackey’s Jadis, the White Witch, who wears silver glitter eyeshadow and whispers, “Come to me, my power.”
She jumps down in her metal dress and waves her silver wand which she uses to cast a spell as Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” begins to play.
“Magic, it’s everywhere,” says Carey Mulligan’s Mabel Kirke.
A winged horse leaps into the air from a cliff carrying a pair of children.
“Have you ever seen a world being born?” Hinds’ voice returns at the end to ask as the iconic lion, Aslan, is made of some kind of cosmic dust to roar.
