Jacqueline Smith reveals in her new memoir, “I Once Knew a Guy Named Charlie,” that her first husband, actor Roger Davis, cheated on her with his real estate agent.
In the book, the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ actress recalled learning of Laura’s affair with her husband, Bill, two years after their marriage, when she tried to cheat on Smith.
Smith, now 80, said she spoke to Laura, who came clean about the matter.
“I couldn’t imagine how two people I trusted could betray me for so long,” she wrote in her book. “Laura was telling me to my face what she had done, but I still couldn’t believe it.”
Shortly before Laura’s confession, Smith was visiting a friend in New York City to look at an apartment he and Davis were thinking of renting when he met Warren Beatty, who asked him to audition for a film he was working on.
Smith remembers, Davis suddenly appeared in front of the group and told Beatty that his then-wife could not be in his film because she only did commercials.
Smith later learned from Laura that while she was talking with Beatty, Davis was having sex with her in the apartment above.
But Smith said that when she asked Davis about the affair, he denied it and blamed Bill.
Davis reportedly told Smith, “Laura is just jealous. She’s always coming on to me, but of course I’m not sleeping with her.”
“You know, Bill probably wanted to sleep with you, and that’s his game.”
Ultimately, Smith decided to stay with Davis.
“I discovered that denial could be seductive,” he wrote in his memoir. “At that time, blind faith was easier to believe than truth. And some truths had to be seen to be believed.”
She added, “My options were to leave Roger after only two years of marriage, and feel humiliated by my innocence, or to give the man I loved the benefit of the doubt and hope I made the right decision. I chose the latter.”
However, the couple’s marriage broke down after two years, when Smith discovered Davis in bed with another woman on their fourth wedding anniversary.
Smith and Davis were married from 1968 to 1975, the same year they met.
The Golden Globe nominee married actor Dennis Cole in 1978, but they divorced three years later when she discovered he was cheating.
Smith’s third marriage was to cinematographer Anthony B. Richmond, whom he met on the set of the 1980 film “Nightkill”. They had two children, son Gaston and daughter Spencer-Margaret, before divorcing in 1989.
Since 1997, Smith has been married to her fourth husband, cardiothoracic surgeon Brad Allen.
