Idina Menzel recalled a “really tough” time period when her and Taye Diggs’ marriage was ending, just as her career was taking off.
“We were separating and it was really hard,” Menzel shared about their 2013 divorce during a New York Comic Con panel on Thursday. per people.
“And then ‘Frozen’ was coming out just like Taye — we were growing apart.”
Menzel said the 2014 Disney hit made her indispensable because her song “Let It Go” from the “Frozen” soundtrack was everywhere.
“Poor guy,” he quipped to Diggs. “It was ‘Let it Go.’ She’s in a mall and she’s like, ‘It’s fine! It’s everywhere, ‘Let it go, let it go.’ Like, ‘I can’t let this go!’
“It was very complicated that whole time,” she added, admitting that being a part of “Frozen” “saved” her as she was going through the emotional turmoil of her divorce.
“It was filling my heart with joy, love, forgiveness and all these things,” Menzel shared. “And I’m also able to show this amazing movie to my son.”
Menzel and Diggs first met in the mid-’90s while starring together in the original Broadway production of Jonathan Larson’s “Rent.” He also co-starred in the 2005 film adaptation.
They married in 2003 and in 2009 their son Walker, now 17, was born.
The former couple announced their breakup in December 2013.
“Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs have jointly decided to separate at this time,” representatives for the couple told People magazine at the time. “His primary focus and concern is for his son. We ask that you respect his privacy during this time.”
Menzel has previously spoken about the “turbulent” years she faced following “Frozen”, as her personal life was in disarray.
“I think it’s been a very tumultuous, dynamic few years,” he said in 2016.
“During the success of ‘Frozen’ and taking my career to a new place, I had to go through a divorce in my personal life and the grief, guilt and regrets that come with it all.”

In 2017, Menzel married her second ‘Rent’ co-star, Aaron Lohr.
As for Diggs, he was last romantically linked to star and singer April Jones, whom he dated from 2021 to 2023.
Since their separation, the exes have built an amicable co-parenting relationship for their son.
“She has a career and she has her own relationships and she still makes sure Walker is where he needs to be when he needs her,” Diggs. told people Menzel’s in 2022.
