What TMZ viewers never saw

West’s May 2018 TMZ appearance became notorious for comments broadcast by TMZ. His slavery-related comments prompted then-TMZ employee Van Lathan to confront him in the newsroom.

EURweb covered Lathan’s response to West at the time and later reported West’s attempt to explain the slavery controversy.

The existence of the West’s Hitler-related comments is not a new revelation for 2026. Lathan revealed in 2022 that West had also expressed admiration for Hitler and the Nazis during a 2018 visit and that those comments were not broadcast. CNN later reported that a person present during the encounter confirmed that West had made favorable references to Hitler.

Rosenblum’s description adds what is important: He attributes the decision to remove the material exclusively to Levin.

Why does the alleged editing decision matter?

News organizations routinely edit interviews. The bigger issue is what TMZ allegedly left out when it aired another inflammatory statement from the same attendee.

West’s slavery-related comments made international news in 2018. His alleged praise of Hitler remained unnoticed, gaining further significance over the years as West began to make openly anti-Semitic statements in public.

GQ also places Rosenblum’s allegation within a broader investigation into the relationship between TMZ’s editorial discretion and its extraordinary celebrity access.

The magazine reports that Levine paid $80,000 in 2011 to obtain footage of a young Justin Biber Instead of publishing it immediately, it was shelved using racial slurs. A former employee told GQ that he believed Levin considered withholding the footage to be “the ethical thing to do.” The material was ultimately reported elsewhere before TMZ published it.

GQ also points to TMZ’s acquisition of 2023 footage that shows UFC chief Dana White in a physical altercation with his wife. The footage comes with a sit-down interview with Levine, while TMZ has been receiving UFC exclusives.

GQ’s extensive reporting states that TMZ’s approach has at times enabled the outlet to report on famous and powerful people while maintaining access to them.

Questions GQ’s reporting raises

None of this establishes why Levin allegedly deleted West’s Hitler comments.

There is no verified evidence that Levin did this to protect West, maintain TMZ’s access to him, or hide his views. Rosenblum alleges Who decided to edit? Not why it was created. Levin declined GQ’s request for an interview, while a lawyer representing him responded to other issues raised in the magazine’s investigation. Mediaite reported that TMZ did not immediately respond to its request for comment about Rosenblum’s specific allegation.

Still, the paradox is hard to ignore: TMZ made West’s pro-slavery statement part of the public record, while his alleged praise of Hitler remained on the cutting-room floor in the same form.

Four years later, the West’s admiration for Hitler was no longer personal. In December 2022, he publicly declared during his appearance on Alex Jones’s “Infowars”, “I like Hitler.”

If Rosenblum’s description is accurate, TMZ encountered that side of West in 2018. The public did not see this easily.
