There was a moment nearly 30 years ago when Dave Grohl channeled grief into music, creating what would become one of the biggest stadium rock bands of this century.
Nirvana drummer Grohl realized his world had fallen apart when Kurt Cobain took his own life on April 5, 1994. Instead of walking away, Grohl started working. He wrote an entire album of music, recording all the instruments, within a week in October 1994.
The rocker assembled a band, the Foo Fighters, and was axed. He moved away from the kit to front and center of the stage. The first self-titled Foos album was released in June 1995, the first of 12 studio albums by the rockers. For the first time in their career, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, their first year of eligibility. The Beatles’ Paul McCartney was there to join Grohl and company.
Everything comes back to that first album and those early great songs. The Foose begin their four-night musical residency Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, for the late-night show’s Halloween Takeover week.
