Since I Found John Steinbeck’s Book-to-Screen Adaptation east of eden With 2026 on the TV schedule, I was eager to see the classic get the miniseries treatment. Now that it’s here and I’ve loved it, wow! There are a lot of standout moments in the show, but I need to talk about a scene from the final episode where we learned a shocking behind-the-scenes fact from the cast about Florence Pugh meeting Cathy on the set.
more than east of eden The moment is building when Aaron Trask learns that his mother is alive and owns a brothel named Kate, after her nickname. This happens after Caleb spent most of his life protecting his brother from hard truths, and Aron has constructed an idealized picture in his mind of who his mother was. But when Caleb is filled with anger, that evening he presents their father with the money earned from war profits (which Chris Abbott’s Adam vehemently refuses), she decides to take Aaron to Kate. Here’s how Joseph Zada, the actor behind Caleb, recalled that moment on set to CinemaBlend:
This was the first scene we ever filmed. And, we spent three weeks in rehearsals, separated from Florence. So none of us had ever seen Florence. They set it up so there were 50 extra people in the room. There was live music. There were naked women. There were men in five-piece suits. There was really cigarette smoke. And the camera comes and follows us. And the first time we see Florence is the moment you see it on screen. It’s like Joe and I are making eye contact with Florence, who is still totally Kathy at that moment. Crazy makeup and crazy veil. It was a crazy moment. And it was crazy, and he touched Joe’s face. And I remember seeing that.
The scene where Aaron and Kathy meet for the first time is thrilling. Aron has no idea what he’s getting into when Caleb brings him to the brothel. And when his eyes fall upon his mother, you feel as if everything bright and shiny he had ever imagined about her has died all at once. Then, as he walks away without saying a word, you can see the pain in Kathy’s eyes at being rejected by her own son.
as i learned east of eden The cast, this scene was actually Jada and Joe Anders’ first day on set and the first time they met Florence Pugh. Anders, who plays Aaron, told us this:
Yes, that was a crazy moment. I mean, because it was the first day, I was very nervous about it because it was obviously the end of my character’s story. It was really hard for me to shoot it, because I was obviously part of an amazing and gorgeous movie with all these incredibly talented, amazing people I was working with.
This is definitely a huge moment east of eden Because this is the last time we see Aaron on the show. Once he sees Kathy, he storms out of the brothel. He looks at his brother for the last time and punches him in the face in anger.
The next time we hear about Aaron is through a letter where he tells his family that he has joined the army, causing Adam to have a stroke. As the show ends, the Trask family learns that Aaron has died in the war. It’s such a sad ending, but at least Caleb gets a moment with his father where he forgives Adam for pushing Aron to abandon his family right before he dies.
It’s a heartbreaking story, and I first imagine the production’s decision to stage this scene to make Anders and Zada (who is also in the new hunger games The movie is coming out next month) Watch Pugh make it even more effective. of netflix east of eden The series is seriously the best show I’ve seen this year, and learning about this behind-the-scenes moment made it even stronger for me as a memorable scene.
