About a year ago, Lili Reinhart posted a tiktok video from the set of love hypothesis In which she and her co-star Tom Bateman performed the “one-armed girlfriend lift”, a popular trend where the guy easily grabs his significant other using only one hand. This was one of our first looks at the on-screen versions of enemies-turned-lovers couple, Olive and Adam, which left BookTok readers in awe. At the time of publishing this article, the video has been viewed more than 84.5 million times.
When I mention the video’s virality, Bateman insists over Zoom, “If 80 million people watch this movie, that’s awesome.” For the notoriously offline actor, taking part in regular TikTok videos required some convincing at first, but “I think if you’re going to go into that world, who better to hold your hand than Lili Reinhart, who has a small nation of followers?” He says showing a smile. I’m happy to report that Reinhart and Bateman’s viral TikTok for the film’s press tour continues.
The 37-year-old English native laughed before launching into what she described as a pretentious actor: “There was something about it that naturally felt like Olive and Adam. We’re so different. Lil and I are from different parts of the planet. We come from different places. She comes in with this tidal wave of online followers, and I’m flying the ‘be present’ flag. Put your phone down. Turn off the internet. And look around.’ And in that meeting of these worlds, there was something very beautiful.”

In fact, this was in line with the film’s “opposites attract” love story. based on new York Times Ali Hazlewood’s best-selling book, love hypothesis Sneaky follows third-year PhD candidate Olive Smith (Reinhart) – who is trying to convince her best friend that she is on her way to happily ever after – as she meets Stanford University’s notoriously strict and brooding Professor Adam Carlson, aka Dr. Evil (Bateman) to pretend that they are a couple.
It’s your classic “fake dating with lovers” song that we’ve seen on screen many times before, but never gets old. love hypothesis Looks at the concept through the lens of lab coats, Bunsen burners and carefully calculated theories as it explores love in its many different forms.
The actor’s IMDb page mostly consists of psychological dramas, suspense thrillers and whodunits. Known for playing dark, mysterious types of characters, he was pleasantly surprised when his agent called him and asked, “How do you feel about doing a rom-com?” Although it is not his usual fare, when Bateman heard that directors Claire Scanlon and Reinhart were attached he was interested. “I thought, ‘This sounds like a lot of fun,'” he shares. Upon receiving the script, he immediately fell in love with the characters, especially the journey Adam takes with Olive, and he liked that the story was more than just two people getting together. Scanlon described Olive and Adam’s relationship with Bateman as what happens when you bring the divide to someone in a different place than you and learn from them and listen to them. “I just thought, ‘What a beautiful place to start a story,'” he says of the film’s themes.
We reach a point in our conversation where Bateman and I begin trading favorite rom-coms. is first on their list the apartment Starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine. “I think it’s one of the most beautiful films ever made,” he says. I come with my millennium answer how to lose a guy in 10 daysAnd he returns with another classic-crazy Starring Cher and Nicolas Cage. He says, “The scene where she comes and meets him for the first time, I had never seen love at first sight properly on camera until then.” we both love really love (“It still gives me goosebumps”), and added that he has recently re-watched some of the heavy hitters wedding planner With Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey.
At the center of each of these films are characters with undeniable chemistry. A great rom-com is based on this very thing. Luckily, Bateman and Reinhart had that fleeting connection.
She told me that the two of them first met via Zoom, which wasn’t exactly ideal, but as soon as they started reading together, it just clicked. “I thought, ‘[This is] ridiculous. Through the screen, I’m already getting more chemistry than I thought I would,” he says. “It had so much warmth and depth, but it was also so fun and silly. I didn’t want Zoom to end because I was having so much fun reading with her.” Whether or not he got the role, Bateman told me he was thrilled to have the opportunity to play with and improve on Reinhart.
The next day he got a call that this part was his. He says, “I was really excited for a lot of reasons, but a huge one of them was that I got to work with Lily more and she was really enjoyable to work with.”
The two met in person in Montreal a week before filming began and spent much of that time alone in a room with creamy pastries supplied by Scanlon and Reinhart. The three discussed each scene in detail. “We spent hours and hours, days on end, sitting together, going to dinners and going to the movies,” he says. “We texted different movies we liked. I texted songs I liked. It was really collaborative, nice and fun and it was a real luxury to know her beforehand [filming]”
As with any worthwhile adaptation of a book, it’s important to stay true to the source material. So naturally, Hazlewood’s book served as the cast and crew’s Bible throughout filming. I asked Bateman if he was nervous at all about pleasing the fans. He tells me it wasn’t so nerve-wracking because there was extra responsibility.
“It made me think, ‘Wow, there’s going to be a lot of people waiting for this to take action on our first day, so let’s get it right, man!'” he says. “We’re all here because of this book and the fan base behind it and the love people have for it. And even though it’s a very funny, quick, sweet, heartwarming movie and there’s a lot of silliness in it, you have to treat it with the utmost respect.”
