Alex Cooper A current university staff professor has spoken out about the alleged 2024 gang rape of a student at Cornell.
“I wanted to come and I wanted to talk about this today because it’s very important to note that it’s been almost a decade since the ‘Me Too’ movement started. A decade. How are we still here?” Cooper, 32, said in his episode on Sunday, October 11,call her daddyPodcast with guest kate manneAn Australian philosopher and professor of philosophy at Cornell University. (#MeToo movement is a social awareness campaign against sexual abuse, harassment and rape culture that gained public attention in 2006 through a sexual harassment victim) tarana burke.)
Cooper continued, “When I started thinking about who could help us understand this moment, who could answer some questions and help us understand where we go from here, I immediately thought of today’s guest. My mother actually introduced me to Kate a few years ago [and] I truly believe she is one of the most brilliant, important feminist thinkers of our time – and she’s also a professor at Cornell University.
Before the Unveil Network founder began his interview with Manne, 43, he also commented how the investigation, which began following a complaint by an anonymous alumnus (aka Jane Doe) in New York City on September 16 following an alleged October 2024 fraternity party incident involving seven Chi Phi brothers, should not exist today.
“We’re talking about campus rape, consent [and] The ways institutions fail women for even longer. We’ve got the language. We have the research, we have the tools and resources to understand sexual violence, help victims, and prevent it from happening, and yet we’re still having the same conversations,” Cooper said. “It’s exhausting. And more importantly, it is infuriating.”
She also said that Jane Doe’s allegations “hold the weight of the countless stories we have as women”, before detailing their enormity.
“The stories of our friends, of our sisters, of our mothers, of our grandmothers, and so many of us, our own stories. And right now one of those stories … is forcing the nation to pay attention,” Cooper said. “More than one in five women have experienced rape. So every one of us knows a Jane Doe. Many of us have been Jane Does.”
Manne’s interview largely condemned the allegations, with the professor at one stage summing up, “For the record, I believe Jane Doe.”
Doe filed legal documents in New York Supreme Court on September 16, alleging that she was drugged and sexually assaulted by seven men on October 19, 2024. The case has attracted national attention and inspired the Governor of New York. Kathy Hochul appointing state attorneys general letitia james As a special prosecutor to re-investigate.
spoke to a legal expert We about the allegations on Friday, October 9, claiming that it is not unusual for a high-profile trial to prompt a follow-up criminal investigation. Los Angeles based civil trial lawyer trey lovell It was said that it was likely that those accused of raping Doe would face criminal charges.
“Then, at that point, whether he is convicted or not, that’s a very different question,” Lovell said.
