The Hollywood community and the public at large are mourning the death of Patrick Stewart at the age of 86 due to Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. Stewart is set to appear in another upcoming film Avengers: DoomsdayIn which he reprized his role as Professor Charles Xavier. The prospect of seeing the late British actor once again play the X-Men’s leader is bittersweet. Earlier this year, co-star Anthony Mackie also opened up about working with Stewart and now, those comments have hit back hard.
Like a lot of people, I grew up watching Stewart’s work in one form or another and, as a superhero fan, x-men movies were particularly creative for me. So it’s great to see such a huge number of tributes coming in for Stewart. What I found in the meantime was an excerpt from an interview Mackie gave at San Diego Comic-Con last summer. While speaking to USA TODAY (as seen on Instagram), she was asked about her favorite part of filming DoomsdayAnd Stewart and some other veterans came forward:
i was really excited [working with] Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Patrick Stewart and Kelsey Grammer. To be able to work with all three of them – they’re three actors I’ve admired, great actors I’ve always wanted to work with, to be in a film with them, for me, is not only life-affirming, but it’s also career-assuring.
Oh, to be a fly on the wall of one of the huge sets the actors filmed on. Sir, I can’t even imagine walking shoulder to shoulder with people like Stewart Let alone any reference to Ian McKellen or Kelsey Grammer when they’re playing their beloved Marvel characters. Given the enormity of Stewart’s body of work, Anthony Mackie’s comments also make complete sense. Sure, he’s headlined big movies and shows, but Stewart was also a classically trained stage actor who worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company. So, yes, sharing the screen with an icon like him will definitely boost an actor’s confidence.

Patrick Stewart’s contribution star trekMarvel, Shakespearean drama and more cannot be underestimated and, in the wake of his passing, his skills as an artist are being praised. Finally, one of a Christmas Carol The star’s last interviews are also quite sour-sweet. In July Stewart was asked about his career and how long he wanted to continue acting. He said at the time that he could not imagine ever officially “retiring”, especially given that he was still being offered interesting roles.
Professor Doomsday. It’s a somewhat poetic end to his career, and it’s even sweeter considering the other actors in the film. many others X Men Veterans are also included the avenger Stewart was joined by the aforementioned McKellen (Stewart’s longtime friend) and Grammer, as well as James Marsden and Rebecca Romijn.
I’m jealous of the fact that Anthony Mackie got to share space with Stewart while making his upcoming Marvel movie. With Stewart no longer with us, I can imagine this experience will hold an even deeper place in Mackie’s heart. I’ll be bracing myself to see the late actor’s posthumous performance as the telepathic Xavier, but I’m also hopeful that the film will serve as a fitting farewell to his character.
Avengers: Doomsday Will be released in theaters on December 18 as part of the 2026 movie schedule. In the meantime, fans can watch Patrick Stewart’s work as Professor X Men Movies with Disney+ subscription.
