‘VisionQuest’ trailer sets Ultron loose again

The latest “VisionQuest” trailer tells the story of fathers and sons.

James Spader’s Ultron is in the latest teaser for the Disney+ series, alternating between working with his AI disciple (or son, if you prefer), Vision (Paul Bettany), while occupying “rent-free” space in his mind. Their pairing is shown in the “VisionQuest” trailer as Vision’s estranged relationship with his son, Tommy Maximoff (Ruaraidh Mollica).

“I had a family. A mother and a father,” Mollica’s Tommy tells police officers at the beginning of the latest teaser for the Disney+ series, adding, “I have these memories. Of someone I’m not.” The latter line appears to refer to the events of “Agatha All Along”, in which Tommy’s brother Billy (Joe Locke) transfers his soul into the body of a recently drowned boy named Thomas Shepherd.

Notably, Billy isn’t mentioned or mentioned in the latest trailer, but his actions have nonetheless caused a stir in the new Disney+ series. If Bettany’s vision succeeds, a family reunion may also be in the near future.

In addition to exploring the unconventional lineage of the Maximoff family and Vision’s own relationship with his “impossibly cruel and callous” creator, “VisionQuest” is returning to the surreal, mind-bending visual palette that partly defined 2021’s “WandaVision.” This should come as welcome news to fans of the latter series, especially as Marvel continues to position “VisionQuest” as the final installment in its “WandaVision” trilogy (“Agatha All Along” serving as its middle chapter).

The latest “VisionQuest” trailer also reveals that Spader’s Ultron will compete for his freedom throughout the Disney+ series. At one point in the teaser, he asks Visions of Bettany to “free” him in order to save Tommy and later comments that he will “finish what he started so many years ago”. There are other, brief shots in the trailer of Bettany’s Vision clashing not only with Spader’s Ultron, but also with other variants of the maniacal robot.

It seems, in other words, like Bettany’s Avenger will have more than just his memories to contend with when “VisionQuest” arrives later this month.

“VisionQuest” premieres Wednesday, October 14 on Disney+.
