“Remember the time we were going to do ‘Cleopatra’?” Scorsese reminisced during a new conversation with his daughter Francesca Scorsese for Tribeca’s interview series “Crafty.” Blaming the Sony hack that followed the controversy surrounding Seth Rogen’s North Korea comedy “The Interview,” the filmmaker revealed production was much further along than previously thought. “We were going to do it. Eric Roth was ready on the script. Everyone was ready. It was Angelina Jolie. We were going. Angelina Jolie was Cleopatra. I’m so crazy about it.”
Scorsese’s frustration has apparently not diminished in the intervening years. When Francesca suggested that the film could have been something special, describing the proposed project as “really wild”, her father returned to the Sony debacle. “Tell Seth, because he ruined everything,” he joked, again referring to the controversy surrounding “The Interview” and North Korea’s reaction to the film.
