New York Film Festival centerpiece “Behemoth!” In , writer/director Tony Gilroy has created a finely calibrated film about a cellist (Pedro Pascal) in a midlife crisis. The movie went over well to a packed Alice Tully Hall and the after-party revelers were a little excited.
Critical approval (see) metascore) of Pascal’s quiet, almost silent, responsive performance – he carries the movie, appearing in every scene – but the Best Actor category is so crowded that it’s hard for Pascal, who has never been nominated, to beat out loud actors like Matt Damon (“The Odyssey”), John Malkovich (“Wild Horses Nine”), Andrew Scott (“Elsinore”), Ryan Gosling (“Project Hail Mary”), and John Turturro (“The Will happen. The only surviving pickpocket in New York”). So far, Pascal has been recognized for his television work in HBO’s “The Last of Us.” “Behemoth!” is his most ambitious lead film role to date.
The film’s strength is its innovative musical structure, as Pascal’s cellist plays various film scores in a series of Hollywood sessions that take his memories back in time. Gilroy deployed nine composers, including James Newton Howard, Michael Giacchino and Alan Silvestri, in what he calls The Behemoth! Collective. According to Academy rules, no more than three composers are allowed to be considered for a film’s original score. But Searchlight hopes that the music committee will consider accepting One Collective in this case.
The music branch was lenient about several songwriters from “K-pop Demon Hunters,” who shared one of their Oscars. But the “Birdman” drumming score was disqualified for not being musical. The two composers of “Arrival”, Max Richter and Jóhann Jóhannsson, were disqualified. But later, Richter was given permission to include both new and old material on “Hamnet”.
Searchlight will have no problem submitting the song “Your God Is Sleeping” by Lucas Frank.
And Gilroy, the showrunner of “Andor” and original screenplay and director nominee for “Michael Clayton,” who is respected in the industry for his writing ability, could be in the running for original screenplay. This defines the word.
Searchlight Pictures released “Behemoth!” Opened starting from 4th December.
