The trailer for the upcoming Baywatch reboot dropped on Tuesday and it was widely mocked by viewers on social media.
Arrow heartthrob Stephen Amell plays Hobie Buchanan, the older son of David Hasselhoff’s character Mitch Buchanan from the original series.
Hobie has now followed in his father’s footsteps as a lifeguard, starring alongside colleagues like Pretty Little Liars bombshell Shay Mitchell, TikTok influencer Noah Beck and model-turned-reality star Brooks Nader.
The plot focuses on Hobie’s long-lost biological daughter Charlie, played by Jessica Belkin, who suddenly reemerges in his life and asks her to work for him.
Although the sneak peek was full of hat tips to fans of the 1990s show — including shots of the chiseled cast running in slow motion on the beach in swimsuits — many viewers certainly weren’t impressed.

Baywatch began production on NBC in 1989 and was canceled after one season, before Hasselhoff helped bring the project into syndication, where it was able to explode in terms of ratings in the 1990s.
Pamela Anderson, Yasmin Bleeth, Carmen Electra, David Charvet, Nicole Eggert and Donna D’Errico were some of the stars to emerge from the series.
The franchise has since spawned the sequel show Baywatch: Hawaii, the spin-off Baywatch Nights, and a trio of direct-to-video films.
In 2017, a Baywatch film with a new cast including Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Zac Efron and Priyanka Chopra was released in theaters, but was critically and commercially unsuccessful.
Now the reboot series is making a splash thanks to the debut trailer, which included a blink-and-miss-it cameo from Megan Thee Stallion.
‘I have to ask why? ‘Who needed a “Baywatch” reboot?’ One viewer groaned, while another grumbled: ‘The first Baywatch lasted 11 seasons and now we’ve got a reboot that looks like a Hallmark movie with sirens. This is the industry we live in.’
Beck, 25, faced particular scorn, as one
‘Is this AI?’ One viewer was surprised while others said: ‘Looks horrible lol,’ ‘No thanks,’ ‘I’m bored already,’ and: ‘You knew this would be bad but…’
Pretty Little Liars bombshell Shay Mitchell also joins the cast of the series, as well as TikTok star Noah Beck, 25.

However some viewers were more inclined towards optimism, with one writing: ‘This looks much better than the movie they came out with a few years ago.’

Several cast members from the original series are reprising their old roles, like Erica Eleniak — who made headlines by joining OnlyFans this August at the age of 56 — as well as Mary McDonnell and Kelly Packard.
Michael Bergin, whose romance with the late Caroline Bessette has made him the subject of renewed interest thanks to this year’s Ryan Murphy series Love Story, is stepping back into the world of Baywatch after starring in the classic 1990s programme.
