David Ellison names joint Paramount-Warner Bros. Skydance

Forget WarnerMount or ParaBros. -David Ellison will name his new media group after the production company that helped him gain a foothold in Hollywood. Taking to social media on Friday, Ellison announced that the merged companies would be named Skydance.

Ellison explains his argument by writing, “Paramount and Warner Bros. shaped the culture of more than a century.” “By combining them, we’re not rewriting history – we’re equipping these iconic studios with a more powerful engine. Together, we are Skydance: a creative first home for bold, quality storytelling.”

Of course, no depiction could possibly reflect those lofty ambitions. But Alison wasn’t told how hard she and her team worked to get their baby name book down to the perfect surname.

“We chose this name for a few important reasons,” he said. “First and foremost, as we bring Paramount and Warner Bros. together, we wanted to preserve what has made each of these studios iconic. Both have distinct identities, extraordinary legacies, and brands that have resonated with audiences across generations. We never wanted a new corporate identity to diminish, replace, or overpower either one. Instead, we wanted a name that would reflect Paramount and Give the combined company its own identity, while allowing Warner Bros. – and all of our extraordinary brands – to remain in the spotlight.

To get Hollywood in the mood for the merger that many are dreading, Team Skydance created a trailer that showcased classic and non-classic movies and shows from both studios. These include highlights from “Forrest Gump,” “The Dark Knight,” and “Inception” as well as works by Taylor Sheridan and the UFC. Starting things off with a clip from “Titanic” is one option (one might want to remind Ellison how that movie ends). And all this imagination comes to a head as a familiar voice — recent Oscar winner and “Sinners” star Michael B. Jordan — talks about the broad scope of what’s to come.

“These brands are more than a destination; they’re a launch pad,” Jordan said. “They don’t just live on the screen; they move through culture. Each one is different – built on story, driven by technology.”

Then why be afraid? Well, the merger of these two over 100 year old studios is expected to cut thousands of jobs. However, Ellison made some concessions, including agreeing that the combined studios would release no more than 30 films annually for the first five years, a significant increase in output.

Not everyone will be there to revive those content engines. Michael De Luca and Pam Abedy, who oversaw Warner Bros.’ The film studio was shown the door on Thursday, while Cindy Holland, who was leading Paramount’s streaming efforts, was also recently handed exit papers. As far as Hollywood’s newest mogul goes, there’s no limit, unless, of course, the debt gets too heavy.

Ellison wrote, “What was once the pinnacle is now just the beginning.”
