The spy who loved mead: Bond icon Daniel Craig buys 18th-century pub in London with three friends and says it’s ‘haunted by the Spectre’

As James Bond, he went up against a parade of terrorists, double agents, and other criminal masterminds.

And Daniel Craig will now be able to add a different foe to his list – a pub ghost.

The actor has bought The Horseshoe, a 250-year-old pub in Clerkenwell – which is ‘haunted by a ghost’.

Craig, 58, has become co-owner of the London boozer with a group of friends – Soho House owner Nick Jones, Flat Iron Steakhouse founder Charlie Carroll and Justin O’Shea, creative director of the star’s lager brand Bad Belz.

But there is another important member of the pub team – the ghost of a hangman who has haunted the bar’s basement for decades.

Retired landlady Pauline Tucker has admitted that Daniel and her co-owners were not mentioned about the scary bookie at the time of the sale, but now they have been filled in on his antics.

The ghost of the pub was once the local executioner and still sometimes lurks in the basement, the landlady admits: ‘You don’t see him. do you feel it.’

However, Daniel jokingly insisted he was not worried many times: ‘I don’t know what he drinks but we may have to leave a pint there: “Here you are Gilbert.”

The big screen star is following in the footsteps of his parents and grandparents, who both ran pubs in Cheshire.

Daniel said he spent his childhood in family pubs, recalling: ‘There were lockouts and things, especially on New Year’s Eve. People used to party very hard.

‘I grew up in pubs. You know the ups and downs of the pub. I know its good and bad.

‘As a child I used to get the chance to go down and talk to the locals, especially at lunchtime, and it was always about what was happening that day. It’s a medium for people to come and talk about stuff, maybe about their problems.’

The star plans to refurbish the pub but cautions he will not turn The Horseshoe into a modern gastropub.

When he’s not behind bars, Daniel has a number of projects on the horizon since leaving the role of Bond.

The actor is set to star in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film adaptation of CS Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia. Magician Uncle Andrew Ketterley.

Meanwhile, speculations have intensified as to who will replace the actor after 007. Craig played the detective in five films between 2006 and 2021.

Five years after Daniel’s final scenes as the legendary character, the role has still not been finalized, despite rumors that Callum Turner, Jack Lowden, Harris Dickinson, Jack Barton and Aaron Taylor-Johnson are on the audition list.

Amazon MGM Studios last year inked a deal with longtime franchise managers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson to take full control of Ian Fleming’s iconic spy franchise.

The studio is said to be currently casting the next installment, which is expected to be announced this autumn. Filming may begin at the end of the year.
